Glow Safely: 10 Candle Tips Every Artful Flame Lover Should Know

Glow Safely: 10 Candle Tips Every Artful Flame Lover Should Know

Candles can stir emotions, warm a space, and turn a simple room into a sanctuary. At The Artful Wick, we believe a candle is more than wax and wick—it’s a tiny sculpture of scent and soul. But with that flicker of magic comes a flicker of responsibility.

Whether you're enjoying one of our signature scents from The Color Palette Collection or melting memories with The Melt Gallery, keeping safety in mind ensures every flame stays beautiful—and safe.

Here are 10 Candle Safety Tips Every Scent Lover Should Follow:

1. Never Leave a Burning Candle Unattended

Think of your candle as a living piece of art. Like any masterpiece, it needs supervision. Always extinguish the flame when leaving the room or before going to sleep.

2. Keep Candles Away from Flammable Objects

Curtains, paper, furniture—your candle’s warmth is for you, not for sparking a surprise. Keep at least 12 inches of space around the candle clear.

3. Burn Out of Reach of Children & Pets

Little hands and curious paws love to explore. Place candles high and secure, where they can glow in peace.

4. Trim the Wick to ¼ Inch Before Each Burn

Wick trimmings may not sound glamorous, but they are the secret to a steady, clean burn. A short wick helps prevent high flames, soot, and mushrooming.

5. Use a Heat-Resistant Surface or Candle Holder

Protect your surfaces (and your artful vibe) with a proper holder or coaster. It’s both safe and stylish. Check out our hand painted candle tiles designed to protect your surfaces!

6. Let the Wax Melt Edge to Edge on the First Burn

This one's for candle longevity. A full melt pool on the first burn prevents "tunneling" and ensures even future burns.

7. Keep the Wax Pool Clear

Dust, wick trimmings, and matchsticks can be tiny troublemakers. Keep the wax pool pristine to avoid unexpected flare-ups.

8. Limit Burn Time to 3–4 Hours

Yes, we know it smells amazing—but longer burns can overheat the container or cause the wick to shift. Give your candle breaks between sessions to cool and reset.

9. Extinguish Gently—Don’t Just Blow It Out

While candle snuffers are ideal for avoiding smoke and wax splatter, we know not everyone has one on hand. A safe alternative? Gently blow out the flame while holding a hand behind it to control the airflow. Once the flame is out and the candle has cooled slightly, you can cover it with the lid—or use a metal spoon to help snuff the flame cleanly. This method reduces smoke and keeps your candle looking (and smelling) its best.

10. Know When to Say Goodbye

When only ½ inch of wax remains (or ¼ inch in tins), it’s time to retire the candle. Don’t worry—there’s always another scent waiting to light your mood.

💡 Bonus Tips:

  • Store candles in a cool, dry spot away from direct sunlight to preserve their color and scent.
  • Always read the label included with your candle—each blend may have its own quirks.

At The Artful Wick, our passion is to craft candles that inspire emotion and elevate every room. With these safety tips in mind, you can enjoy your favorite scents confidently—letting the light in without the worry.
